This winter break Dr. Sparks and Doc Z are bringing you more awesome science!  Get ready for Dr. Sparks Jr. Scientist Club- Rockets and Rovers; a true -week bilingual STEAM winter camp. Join us and explore the red planet.  

  

We will explore Mars through STEAM. STEAM isn’t just 5 letters to put on something that is science related. It’s a methodology we use to learn about a subject from 5 different points of view. 

  

Level 1 – Mission to Mars - Grades 1-3 - Daily STEAM Themes  

Day 1 – S = Science – Atmosphere / Safe landing - Chinese   

  • Explore Mars’ atmosphere  

  • Analyze the soil on Mars  

  • Learn how to land safely on the surface of Mars    

   

Day 2 – T = Technology – Rockets - English   

  • The history of rockets  

  • SpaceX building the rockets of tomorrow  

  • Rocket propulsion - Newton’s third law of motion  

  • Rocket trajectory  

  • Knowing when to launch your rockets  

   

Day 3 – E = Engineering – Mars Rovers - English  

  • Learn the history of satellites, probes, and rovers that have been sent to Mars  

  • Learn to collect data from another planet  

  • Analyzing satellite photos  

  • Compare how different rovers have evolved over the years  

  • Discover the different features of the Perseverance and find out what tests it will perform  

  • Practice operating a remote-control car that is 400 million miles away  

   

Day 4 – A = Art - Interstellar map / Life on Mars - Chinese  

  • Art inspired by the solar system  

  • Design a 3-D map  

  • 3D print a Martian robot   

   

Day 5 – M = Math -   Communication / Food - Chinese    

  • Calculate the length of a day and a year on Mars  

  • Estimating travel time to Mars  

  • Planning how much food to take to Mars  

  • Build a farm capsule  

 
 

Level 2 – Generation Mars - Grades 4-6 - Daily STEAM Themes  

Day 1 – S = Science - Atmosphere / Safe landing – Chinese  

  • The effects of a thin atmosphere  

  • The wonderful world of low air pressure  

  • Design your own Mars lander competition  

   

Day 2 – T = Technology – Rockets - English  

  • The history of rockets  

  • SpaceX building the rockets of tomorrow  

  • Rocket propulsion - Newton’s third law of motion  

  • Flow Rates - Focusing the thrust of a rocket through a nozzle  

   

Day 3 – E = Engineering – Mars Rovers - English  

  • Identify signs or ancient water flow from satellite photos  

  • Compare how different rovers have evolved over the years  

  • Learn the history of satellites, probes, and rovers that have been sent to Mars  

  • Learn how to collect data from another planet  

  • Discover the different features of the Perseverance and find out what tests it will perform  

  • Practice operating a remote-control car that is 400 million miles away  

   

Day 4 – A = Art - Life on Mars   

  • Learn 3D printing technology  

  • Use a 3D printing pen  

  • 3D print a Martian house  

  • Use creativity to make a Martian biosphere   

   

Day 5 – M = Math -   Soil Analysis / Space Food  

  • Retrieve soil samples  

  • Analyze soil samples  

  • The nutritional requirements of space food  

  • Space food DIY

Description

Our winter camps are 5 full days of hands-on science experiments designed to spark your kids’ curiosity through science. The 2 days of English are designed for kids who are learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Dr. Sparks hand-picked team of foreign teachers know how to use the camps designed by Dr. Sparks to help your kids feel comfortable doing science in this English environment. We balance the week with 3 days of Chinese activities that can really dive into some of the deeper science behind the ideas. All of our learning, in English or Chinese, is designed to have your kids touch, try, make, and learn about the Red Planet.

We are so happy to join forces with Leyan to be able to provide our week-long winter camps to kids across the country. Leyan and Dr. Sparks have a shared vision of what Taiwan’s bilingual future looks like. Leyan’s commitment to taking learning out of books and into the hands of our students makes them a perfect match. We often wish we could explain some of the concepts in more detail but are limited by the language ability of the students. Partnered together we can offer your kids 1 week of amazing STEAM experiments, English learning environments, and deep understanding through hands-on learning.
